You don't take them out to retighten them, do you?
I tried to tighten the ones in the engine compartment by putting a vice grip on the top of the piston and turning the self-locking nut with an adjustable wrench (don't have a 17mm wrench in my $30 tool kit). I couldn't get a good enough grip with the vice grip to turn the nut without rotating the entire piston. I've got aftermarket Gabriel struts (autozone) on my car and they don't have an allen key head like I've seen on some struts.
I don't want to have to completely uninstall the strut tower and tighten it while gripping furhter down the piston through the springs. But that seems to be the only way i'm gonna get a good enough grip on the piston to further tighten the self-locking nut.
And what's this thing with cutting the bumper stop? I've only got a 0.75" drop on my accord now with H&R OE Sports.
