I have a 94 Accord that had the factory alloy rims which I painted myself. Been about 3 or 4 months and not a chip yet. I did as follows....
Take wheel off car, mask off tire ( i used masking tape which sucked. I heard you can use index cards taped together)
I washed off the rim and tire using a toothbrush for the hard to reach areas. Let dry.
Next, i took some 320 sandpaper and sanded every inch of the rim
Wash off with soap and water, let dry a bit.
Next, I used 400 sandpaper and sanded it again till smooth (It was actually smooth, just wanted to knock the clear off so paint would stick)
Wash again with soap and water...let dry completely!
I used Dupli-Color graphite wheel paint in a can from AutoZone.
I started with a very, very light coat, waited 10 mins or so, then another coat, wait 10, and then about 2 mopre coats after that. After the final coat....I waited an entire hour before putting it back on the car and I didnt drive till the next day.
I used no clear coat cause its a shiney paint, but you can it's your preference (follow same procedure as paint)
Hope this helps, here is a pic of mine the day after I did them and they still look like this.
that came out really well!
