As for the AWD E46s, it could be a lot worse.
AFAIK, there aren't any specific to the AWD; the front LCA bushings were an issue and the rear brake lines were prone to rust.
If all else fails, I recommend a Subaru BRAT, with the jumpseats in the bed and a pair of sturdy parkas and ski goggles.
