93 Accord A/C help needed.....

Aloha!
For about a week, for comfort reasons, I was alternating the Temperature knob from the "hot" to the "cold" very often and it suddenly stopped turning smoothly. I pulled the knob off and a piece of the underlying plastic had broke off.
Now I can't the A/C to get cold. The compressor still goes on. I've done my best to turn the temp knob to the blue (cold) but still no cold A/C.
A friend told me it might be the Heater cable is stuck or broken but I just wanted to see if anyone can confirm that or had that problem happen to them. I'm not very experienced in DYI but willing to take on new learning chances. H E L P !.....
