OBD2 isn't some massive handicap that people make it out to be, and there's nothing "performance oriented" about OBD1. You'll get essentially the same results from bolt ons regardless of what ECU you run.
If you want to reprogram the thing (and no, you do not get power from a "universal" chip that's not tuned for your car) OBD1 gives you a few more options but it's simple enough to convert an OBD2 car back to OBD1 if need be.
