It can and its possible. There is no disadvantage with the resonator being out besides the small noise and floods. But with floods nothing can save you anyways. So remove it and reset your ECU. 
you'll loose accleration above 110mph (if you have a 5th gen 4cyl ex at least). the air is too turbulant around the wheel well. if you ahve a 5th gen lx/dx, you car is limited to 120 anyway
