If you watch and listen to the vid they followed protocol. They saw what looked like weapons and an RPG, they called for clearance and it was given because one unit called no friendlies in that area and it was again confirmed and cleared by HQ. There is nearly no way they could have known otherwise especially from that distance.

They should not have tried covering it as that implies guilt. They should have simply said it was a tactical error and apologized etc. to make it all smooth over in some fashion.

Watching the vid knowing what they are carrying and doing makes it obvious to us but on the field is a whole other matter.

Was the helicopter in any danger or taking fire?

Were they in danger? Yes they were in a zone that had just been under heavy fire, the battle had just ended and they were still doing a sweep...so yes it was a hot zone.
I agree with Nightshade except for the "dont cover it up, then youre guilty", this is war. Agree on the point of they followed protocol. I dedicated 17 months of my life to that country and doing what we had to do. i will never speak in detail of what I have done, but it all boils down to: Its either me going back to the barracks to eat a meal and call home, or you. And I can say that it was never "you going to yours" it was me going to mine. War is a terrible thing and mistakes do happen, but i would rather cover my ass and make sure I get home, than to play it safe and get dead.
