Before you commit to any gym membership contract, read the fine print, read it thoroughly, and if there's ANY POINT OF CONCERN in the contract no matter which gym you attend, CONSIDER BUYING THE EQUIPMENT rather than debating legal fees or signing that contract.
I moved 30 miles away from my old gym, outside the range specified in the contract which should have permitted me to cancel. Should is the key word. There are requirements to fulfill in order to nullify the contract. You will find shady businesses make you jump through flaming hoops to exit the contract. Gold's Gym is the WORST EVER at this. First they claimed I was still going when I hadn't been even once after I moved. An employee was logging in as me in order to process my bill, and their headquarters informed me of that after 9 phone calls. They continued extracting their monthly fee from my credit card after I faxed them my cancellation. When I moved, I also changed jobs. I don't have access to the fax transmittal report for evidence that would hold in a court of law because I faxed it from that business which no longer exists. The first time I faxed it, they said it was "incomplete". I then faxed them what they asked for. Didn't call them or think anything further of it because I did my part. They said initially that it would cost 2 months dues to cancel, and for the next 2 months I figured that fee was what they were charging me. But in months 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc... after dozens of phone calls with uncooperative Connexion employees, I could not get them to stop billing the monthly fee even a year later. I asked why, and they stated the contracts auto-renewed, and I would have to pay off the remaining year's membership of $640. It wasn't until month 7 that they claimed that they never got my second fax, which is total bullshit.
I hired an attorney who has cost me almost that in order to file cease-and-desist orders, cancelled my credit card, and now my near perfect credit score (had a high score of 840 and a low of 816 between all 3) has been trashed for non-payment, and there's a judgment filed to my former address of $1920. The cost of membership for 3 years, of which I've never once stepped foot in there.
FUCK GOLD'S GYM! BUY THE EQUIPMENT. If I ever do step foot in there again, I will be carrying a 10-gallon can of gas mixed with dishwashing liquid. I'm leaving this up to my attorney and hoping the class action lawsuit gains traction because they do this to everyone that cancels. I may never get my credit score back to where it was, and that's a terrible price to pay for being health-conscious.
