If you have your gun and ammo in two separate, locked boxes that are in a compartment separate from the driver (ie. the trunk) and not in the glove box or console, then I'd say you're pretty safe and law enforcement shouldn't give you any shit about it as long as you are licensed to own it.

This includes having no ammo in any mags or speed loaders either.
