OK, so you do think that a carbon build up could be caused by a timing issue? The plugs were 60,000 old when I changed them, and they were not burned or warn, they just had white junk on them. Is this a symptom of my timing being off?

that's a sign of having 60k miles on your plugs. You're fine. Also depending on the year of your car you need to short a connector before you adjust the timing. I can't remember the name of it, maybe somebody can chime in.
