I know on my 93 the starter and solenoid are combined in a semi-single housing. it was fairly easy to do. 3 bolts and a ground wire. i used a 14mm and 17mm wrench and socket, took bout 45min to take off and 1 hr to put the new one on. $95 (totally worth it im my opinion) at AutoZone. The location should be about in the same area. If Im looking at my engine it was on the left side near, almost 1/2 under the distributor. Kinda looks like 2 tubes connected to each other bout 4-5 inches long. Your symptoms are almost exactly what was happening to me.
