I read that Newsweek article a few days ago -- it's been making the rounds in the medical community. Oprah is known to push a lot of quackery/woo-type stuff on her show, the type of thing like "lose 50 pounds in a month with this special diet!" or "take these bioidentical hormones to maintain your youth" -- the vast majority of these things are not backed up by any scientific evidence, have not been appropriately tested in humans, and some can be downright dangerous to your health. She has even gotten behind "the Secret," the idea that thinking positively will make positive things happen. This is beyond the "have a good attitude and good things will happen" type of thinking, but more like thinking about a sandwich and someone on the street will walk up and give you a sandwich, or thinking that you can cure your breast cancer and that it will be magically cured without medical intervention.
Oprah is often considered the bane of many phsyicians existence, as she promotes untested therapies on her show and most of the time does not give equal time or credence to real scientists or respected physicians. Since she has such clout with her viewers, they often buy into these treatments hook, line, and sinker. Anyone should be able to tell by watching Oprah that these therapies haven't worked for her -- she's constantly getting fat, losing the weight, then getting fat again.
Suzanne Somers is just a nut who can't stomach the fact that she is aging, and rather than aging gracefully she is holding on to any last hope that she might be able to regain her youth and trying anything that might possibly keep her young.
It's really a good article, and if you have some time you should read it.
