dave - just make quarter to half turns of the truss rod in slow increments. it turns intuitively - i.e. you want to turn it to the left to loosen the rod and put a slight outward bow in the neck.
Keep tension on the strings - just leave them in tune.
DO NOT crank on it, or give the truss rod full turns at a time, or else you can run the risk of snapping the neck, or cracking along the truss rod.
And, how are you setting the intonation?
A common way to do it is to plug into a tuner, and tune the guitar. Then, hit the 12th fret on each string, and adjust the saddles to tune to the 12th fret.
