I've thought about this many times because I used to live and walk my dog near open space and you could hear the coyotes at night and sometimes see them during the day.
If coyotes attacked my dog I would just beat the shit out of them. That would probably be enough to scare them away from humans permanently. But then, a coyote is maybe 50lbs and my dog was 150
