Not keeping a gun available sort of defeats the purpose of home protection. It's not like you're going to have time to go to your gun safe, open the lock, get your gun out, load it, and use it before something "bad" happens.
This was my dads argument. Problem is his friends come over a lot and bring their nosy kids (6-13). I wouldn't want an accident like that on my hands.
