As usual BJ was trying to play the high guard to set up omoplata, armbar/triangle, but his legs kept slipping down GSPs' back. Sweat does that too, but vaseline sure doesn't help friction. So it's possible and probably that vaseline made it harder for BJ Penn to work his guard, meaning that his cheating directly affected the fight.
