I have a 2000 2.3 liter that does the same thing. I think it is most likely the oil has settled to the pan and the upper end is noisy until the oil gets pumped throughout. I am just a shadetree mechanic so I could be wrong. I have 162,000 miles on mine so things have worn a little and are noisier.
