Default Intermittent ABS light - 2004 Accord EX 4cyl.

Hey everyone -long time reader/first time poster here. Last week my ABS light came on during my drive home from work. Since that time it has come on and off at random times (sometimes when I start the engine, sometimes while I am driving, sometimes not at all). It has been snowy here lately and it seems that when the light is on my ABS doesn't come on (I don't feel the pedal pump itself).

So I took the car to my mechanic and he ran a diagnostic test that said the speed sensor was not working on the front driver's side. He said it looked rusted and/or corroded around the sensor and that he'd order me a new one and put it on next week (after Christmas). He said that he couldn't remove the sensor because of the aforementioned problem.

It is the week of Christmas and I'll be doing quite a bit of traveling. Is there any danger for me to drive the vehicle? Does the mechanic's advice seem sound? Are there any other things I can do on my own to make it work properly again?

thanks.
