Don't forget the Swiftboat veterans for truth, and every other freakin instance where they lied and distorted facts. One of those blogs you linked to argued that saying that "Obama isn't a Christian" isn't a lie because it's "subjective" and there's no written record to prove that he is.
That's the logical parallel to me saying McCain raped babies in Vietnam, because no one DIDN'T see him do it. It's a pure fabrication used to distort and contaminate people's opinion.
Anyways, justifications like that often means the person coming up with them knows they're lying and doesn't want to admit it. Back on topic, I'm not sure if we should prosecute people criminally for this, but god damn people, there's such things as accountability and honesty, which I feel the Republican party lacks to a terrifying degree. How else do you handle people who swindle and lie without regret?
