For tempered glass they cut it first then send it out for tempering. If you are concerned about it shattering get laminated glass instead. When I worked in the hotels I replaced broken tempered panes with laminated, had fewer breaks and less to clean up.
You just need to call a glass shop and get the info, most can price it over the phone.
