I had to take my wife's iPod nano back a couple days after I bought it. Holding the center and menu buttons only helped me a couple times but there was a bigger underlying problem. It would freeze when it was hooked up to the computer as well as when I was just trying to play it. I ended up exchanging it at Best Buy and haven't had a problem since. You might consider an exchange if you continue to have problems.
