On my car the "cups" are very hard plastic, a separate piece from the panel. I've never taken a look at the ones on that year, guess it's different.
on my 97 coupe...which applies to all 96-00 civics...the inside of the "cup" as he states it is a softer plastic than the door panel plastic itself!!
easy to cut around...you can always get a dremmel...and do a tidy job!!
