Default Engine Revs on 2nd to 3rd Shift (AT)

The automatic transmission in my new (old) 1989 Gen I Integra seems A-OK (mileage good, doesn't increase engine revs excessively between gas on and gas off when in gear etc.) except for two characteristics. I know nothing about automatic transmissions, and am not sure if this is an internal transmission issue, or a 'modulator valve' thing (do these transmissions even have one?).

1. On the shift from 2nd to 3rd gears, the engine revs up too much. This is more pronounced in the morning, or when the car is 'cold'.

2. At stops, with the car in gear and my foot on the brake (traffic light), the car shudders slightly. If I release the brake, or shift into neutral, the car stops shaking.

What might be causing these symptoms? What might a solution be?
Oh yeah - how the heck does one check the AT fluid level on this car?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.
