I get terrible mileage. But that's because I live/work downtown, and almost all of my trips are less than 3 miles, in traffic, lots of stop-and-go and stoplights. I barely ever get on the highway. And it's okay, because I only do about 7,000 miles total each year, split amongst the 3 vehicles.
