I direct an after school program serving 150+ elementary students. Are the students trouble makers? There are the typical bad boys, and theres also the occasional group that just needs special intervention even at the elementary level. I am talking kids that bring knives to school, get in fights, vandalize...My program gives them that, and if I dont have the resources to, I direct them to someone at the organization that does.
An unique component to all of our after school programs is that we utilize high school interns to teach a reading curriculum and teach enrichment courses. So I manage a group of 27-30 of them...in addition to 13 school day teachers who does homework tutorial.
Are the high school interns troubled? No so much as the kids that go through Street Side. I have interns with 4.0+ gpas and are university bound with full scholarship rides. I also have some that are more challenged academically, but have street smarts and are able to build awesome relationship with the kids. Those are more of a challenge of mine...getting them on track academically while they maintain the internship. This year, I had 1 intern that also came with a PO. :uhhok:
