Right. That's why I'm trying to get another one so that that doesn't happen. There was an old guy at Pomona that did this, but I haven't been there in years.
They can restore a damaged plate but they can't manufacture a replacement unless the state offers the service. Otherwise they can charge you with fictitious plates or forgery of a plate
