My first advise will be the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve). I have a 2000 EX and had a ton of symptoms like the one you described. After trying a lot of things that one was the culprit.

You don't have to replace it right away. You can start by removing a clean it with Throttle body cleaner or seafoam. That should solve/minimize the problem for a few months or permanently.
