a quick bit of 'research' nets that cinco de mayo is in fact of mexican origin, primarily a regional holiday in pueblo (which isnt exactly on the border of california or the US). its a celebration of initial mexican victories over french forces
californians turned it into what it is in the US, but it is still a celebration of sorts in select portions of mexico.
well, since you googled the shit out of it, you might have picked up that it is largely an American holiday and is NOT celebrated in South America if at all.
