step 1. Inventory the hardware in your pc.
step 2. What hardware is most likely going to need a mfgr specific driver (ie. not the clock driver)? Video card. NIC. Audio. Keyboard/Mouse if you have something fancy.
step 3. Visit these mfgr's websites and see if they offer 64bit versions of the driver for the OS you are looking at.
step 4. Download that driver now and put it on a cd/dvd/thumb drive for when you need it later.
step 5. Reinstall with 64bit OS.
step 6. Install drivers from what you already downloaded.
step 7. Enjoy.
Yes, not everything will have 64bit drivers, you need to check. But it's getting much MUCH better than most people will lead you to believe. My system COULD run XP/Vista 64bit, I did my homework and all my hardware has XP64 and Vista64 drivers..... but I'd rather run Kubuntu/Linux 64bit. Which really takes care of all that needless driver hunting around, for me.
