It has been my experience that most all F22s have a tendency to sound a bit like diesels as you can hear the valves tap/tick, fuel injectors, etc. In fact, mine even has an internal knocking/rattling right between 1500-2000 rpms that might be what you are referring to as 'piston slap'. The engine has sounded this way since new... it's never been particularly quiet. I've had people tell me that my engine had a spun bearing, rod knock, etc. when I first bought it with 45k miles. It's still running fine with 207k+. These are noisy engines and I believe that is pretty much the nature of the beast. The K-series is definitely a superior motor in this regard.
Most of the engines have way to much pay in the last adjustment by 100K. I recommend using a angled feeler gauge to set the lash about .001 to .002 tighter on the intake side. Set exhaust to spec. This will eliminate a lot of valve noise. Most SOHC engines are noisy to start.
