I haven't kept fish in years. I don't think I've ever had fish die from ick. Most died from being killed by one of the other fish. I think a few got stuck in the rocks and died.
i used Jungle Ick guard. My carbon filter is pretty old so my aquarium dude told me it would be fine to leave it in.

Unless you want to tear your tank down and rinse it with vinegar/hot water, you're probably going to have to let it sit for a couple weeks for the ick to pass.
well, i was told that i probably had a combo of problems ... 1. even slightly overfeeding my fish and 2. a fluctuation of +/- 3 degrees...
i would say #2 definitely, i had an old heater and i had to adjust it from time to time. i bought a new one with a digital thermostat.
the aquarium shop dude told me just to let it run for a week, without a host the ick will die (since ick is a parasite) he told me to change my carbon filter a day or 2 before i reintroduce fish to the tank... i told him i would probably be back to get a few fish next weekend and he said that would be fine.
