Was it the medicine that turns the water blue and were you running a activated carbon filter whilst treating the ick? Carbon filters out (adsorbs) the medicine rather quickly.

I haven't kept fish in years. I don't think I've ever had fish die from ick. Most died from being killed by one of the other fish. I think a few got stuck in the rocks and died.
