Why would they need to open up the engine to see if the timing belt was snapped? The belt is not inside the engine.....and this is your mechanic telling you this? Also, why would you need a new engine when he doesn't even know what is wrong with it? If he is a competent mechanic, he would open up the engnie and see what exact is wrong.... Find a new mechanic.
