For Halo 3:

In a "ranked" match, you can't hear your opponent at all, until the post-game lobby regroup. At that point, all mics are live.

In a "social" match (not counted for leveling), you can hear your opponent in the pregame lobby, post game lobby, and even between their death respawn times. You'll hear quite a bit more racist stuff when not in a ranked match.

The ranked folks are a completely different bunch. I've only been shit talked to maybe 5 times out of 400 matches. When they lose, they take it, laugh, and move on.

The social rooms are filled with internet, anonymous, degenerates. They'll call you a f@g, homo, n!gger, etc until there out of breath. When this happens, I crank up the Rick Astley and drown them out.

"mute" is an option for all though .
