You've got all the trails you could ever want over there. The mountains between the suburbs along the 101 and the beach down south are a hiker's / mountain biker's playground. Some pretty nice places to go driving too.

Otherwise, its pretty much generic sleepy suburbs. LA is close enough, but thats about it. I guess Santa Barbara is an option too, but thats slightly more of a drive.
