The rev limiter WILL NOT protect you from a misshift. The rev limiter works on acceleration if you are at or below the limit it cannot stop the engine dead in its tracks. It shuts down your fuel supply, but the engine still continues to spin. Watch your tach as you down shift. The RPM's go up because you are asking the engine to keep spinning at the same point while the gears get larger. And what may have happened on this is that he may have been in 4th and down shifted to 1st gear.
