Default someone help me understand...

someone tried to (or I guess they kind of succeeded) steal my car last night. I came out to it this morning and my door was open. Then when I opened the door it beeped like it does when the key is in the first position (radio on). Look at the ignition and it's jammed in that position. Try to put the key in but it didn't go all the way in... still started though. So I thought oh good, I guess my new ignition (different key from the door of the car) saved my car from getting stolen. Well when I got home, I don't know how or why I did what I did, but I discovered you don't even need a key to start the car anymore. Just something strong enough to turn the ignition. I started the car with my bottle opener
So I took my steering wheel and all other important papers out and am going to do so for as long as I live here lol.

but what I don't understand is, why would the person go through all that work and not steal it? maybe they drove around then brought it back? I know they wouldn't bring it back but its not making sense to me. Maybe realized it was a pos and wouldn't be that much fun driving it around?

edit: oh and nothing is missing either
