The VTC part of i-VTEC controls the cam phasing. The stock cam gears are continuously adjustable by the ECU. You get the Toda gears, and the ECU no longer plays with the cam phasing and instead you have regular old adjustable cam gears. The best option would be to play with the cam phasing settings within the ECU since there definately is some power to be gained by doing so.
