Being a realtor, I get a lot of people's reaction to pergo/engineered/real wood...
At least around here, the consensus is that any of these are a step up from carpet. If you're just trying to make the place look presentable, though, carpet is the most cost-effective way.
I personally think pergo looks pretty cheap and crappy... I really dislike the 3 fake boards to one board look... when the light hits it and you can see the joints, it just looks like crap. Also, if you have water damage, its pretty much fawked... peels up, and separates. With wood, you can just resurface it and you're set. When its so much more affordable than real hardwood, though, its easy to see why people choose it. When the time comes, I'll just make my brother pitch on the floors
