Which program are you in? If you are going into automotive most shops will not expect you to have a decent sized tool set yet. I'd start off with a small Craftsman set. Make sure to get a 1/2" impact gun, 1/2" torque wrench, all your 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" sockets, extensions and ratchets. That should get you started. You can also pick up small stuff at Harbor Freight. Such as hammers, prybars, pick/hook set, screwdrivers, various measuring tools for brakes/brake rotors, tread depth of tires, and tire pressure gauge. I've started with a small Craftsman set and added more stuff as I've seen what I need rather than want. Only buy tools that make you more efficient and most importantly make you money back. Also get a cheap Craftsman box until you can get that nice Matco box

Just make sure the first few months you learn more than emphasize on purchasing tools. You have a long road ahead good luck :P
