You don't have to pull the head to do valve springs. Your friend got screwed. <edit> Unless you mean your friend pulled the head himself, in which case, he could have just left it on there.

Replacing the valves is pretty easy (you will need a valve spring compressor though) and if you've got the knowhow to take the head off, you might as well do the rest.
