My guess would be a fuel problem. Perhaps the fuel pump is intermittently cutting out, or the carburetor can't handle the flow. I would rebuild and clean the carb first just to rule that out.

My second gas is a spark problem - It may be a distributor or wires issue, though this is less likely IMO.
