As stated, the best thing to do is research, research, research.

I would seriously recommend researching for at least a month before you drop a dime into performance modifications. There is a lot of valuable information out there, and at the same time, there is also a lot of misinformation out there. Go through forums and technical articles to see what setup(s) suit your budget and application.
