you get gradually better when playing. My kills have gone from 3 (day 1) to 20 (2 weeks later).
If you're playing team slayer, hop in a vehicle and go nuts. If you're playing normal slayer, look for piles of people and unload your grenade inventory.

VIP = points. You need to find the opponent's teammate that's deemed "VIP". Kill him to score. Kill anyone else, and you get nothing.
