did you pay attention in class?
you're suppose to use both brakes all the time.. because in an emergency situation, your instinct is to do what you usually do, which would be only front brakes in your case and you'll just endo/superman off your bike

locking up rear is not bad. you're suppose to keep it locked since you still have control and ride the locked rear to a stop.
