Sounds like some confusion in terminology. There isn't an ignition 'module' in the steering column. I bet he was talking about the electrical part of the ignition switch (as opposed to the key cylinder).

If you can make it work or not work by simply holding the key in a slightly different position, that would pretty much prove it's the electrical part of the ignition switch. A better test would be to use a multimeter to test continuity through the different circuits of that switch as you move the key.
