I've replaced a bunch of axles due to inner cv joint failure. The symptom is exactly like you describe except with somewhat violent shaking and only under acceleration.

I actually had one customer get mad at me when I suggested inner joint failure because they had already convinced themselves that the engine was mifiring badly.
