I've driven a Jetta with the same inline-5 as the Rabbit and it's an absolutely hopeless pile of shit. All the thirst of a six with none of the power. Add in the fact that VW still has trouble with basic electronics and body trim and the answer should be obvious.

If you want a cheap, reliable runabout with a warranty, pick up a Mazda 3 or a Nissan Sentra. Both are far better cars with better gas mileage to boot.
