It's not really a matter of it working or not. It's just to get your attention. It's actually a horrible word when used in a harmful way. I was on the receiving end of that word many times as a kid, and it DOES NOT feel good.

I'm glad that there are people on this earth that take the time to do things like this, regardless of how stupid and idiotic others may think it is. It's absolutely American and gives me goosebumps.
