Do you have a CEL?

Does your car spit and sputter when you're stuck in this RPM range, or is it just a constant damper?

It's possible that you have a bigger problem and your ECU is switching over into a safe mode, then some how the problem fixes itself and "WHAM" your ECU switches back over to regular mode and takes off. If you have a CEL get the code and see what you find.
